High School Girls Track

Information Letter 2008

March 4, 2008

Parents:

Your daughter has decided to participate in track this spring. Track is a great sport because it gives everyone a chance to participate.  We, as coaches, will do our best to find an event in which your athlete will have the best chance of competing at a varsity level.  Our philosophy is to focus on your daughter’s beginning performance at an event and then simply try to improve on the event by studying the event and working hard at improving the skills that the event requires.   We will try to focus on comparing her times/distances alone and not always compare to competitor’s performances.  Be assured, however, that we will help your athlete overcome the fear of competition by preparing her to compete aggressively and with a great winning attitude!  If numbers allow us this year, we will enter some meets with a JV team which will allow everyone on the team to participate in at least three events and compete against varsity competition.

Each time your daughter participates in an event, we think it is important!  Times and distances are recorded each time your daughter enters an event and kept up-to-date on the Cougar Girls Track Web Site.  Every time and distance for “every” athlete from 1996 to 2006 can be found on the Site along with records, top ten lists, meet team results, track and field links, and photos.  It is a great way for our athletes to compare their own results from meet to meet and year to year.

Normal practice time will be from 3:15 to 4:45. However, some girls will be dismissed earlier or possibly later if they participate in specialty events such as hurdling or field events. Each morning, the practice schedule will be posted on the girls track web site. If they are going to be absent from practice, they must let me know ahead of time.  The coaches can then adjust their practice schedules.  For example, if we only have one high jumper, and that jumper will not be at practice, we will adjust our practice schedule and free that coach up to do something else.

Please take the time to become familiar with the school’s current academic and good conduct policies. They are in the student handbook. It is the responsibility of your daughter to know and adhere to these guidelines.
